Sleeping on a mattress that’s less than perfect can have a range of negative effects on your daily life – from a sore back to daytime fatigue. Luckily, most of the major problems your mattress might face are pretty easy to identify. By keeping an eye out for these telltale signs, you can decide whether your old bed should be replaced with a new bed and base that will never let you down.
If your mattress has a broken spring, you’ll know right away. There will be an uncomfortable spot on your bed and maybe even a lump sticking you in the side. The bed will also likely squeak and creak when you put weight on it. Unfortunately, there isn’t a good solution for this issue. Few mattresses can be opened to swap out the coils and trying to swap out a spring will definitely void your mattress’ warranty. Your best bet here is to invest in a new mattress as soon as possible. If you’re dealing with a broken coil, your bed is either old enough that it needs to be replaced, or the quality isn’t good enough that it wouldn’t be doing your back any favours anyway!
If you have a spring mattress, a layer of foam separates the inner coils from the top of your bed. Over time, this foam can compress, leaving you with a hard, lumpy surface. Foam mattresses have a similar problem: uneven weight distribution across the bed can lead to permanent indentations in the mattress surface, making it uncomfortable and unsupportive.
You can try to give a mattress like this new life with a foam topper, or by adjusting your sleep habits to wear your bed down more evenly. A foam topper can give you a few more months with your old mattress, but ultimately, you’ll need a mattress that can give you proper support.
If you have trouble sleeping or have physical issues resulting from your bed, this could be a sign that you’re in need of a new one. The typical mattress is designed to be a flat surface that is equally supportive in all areas – since your body has curves and joints (not perfectly flat surfaces), a worn out or incorrect mattress applies too much pressure in certain areas causing hot spots and joint pain in the morning.
Other mattresses are designed to completely outline to your body, not providing enough support, forcing your muscles to work for a healthy posture while you sleep. How can you tell? Stretch in the morning for 15 minutes. If your aches and pains go away, then you can probably blame your mattress.
If you toss and turn before you fall asleep this might also be a mattress problem. For some, finding a position to relax is 75% of the battle. While there are other factors involved, having a mattress that suits your ideal sleep position is important.
Back sleepers – If you like sleeping on your back, but your mattress is too firm or has begun to form a valley, you’ll feel like you’re sinking in quicksand and you’ll feel the back pain when you wake up.
Side and stomach sleepers – A mattress that is too firm will certainly lead to problems since your joints naturally would like to sink slightly into the cushion of your mattress. A mattress that is too soft will lead to spine issues over time and expensive chiropractic bills.
If one or more of the above signs are identifiable to you, it’s time for a new bed.
