What’s your healthy heart score?

What’s your healthy heart score?

Be sure to take care of your heart this Valentine’s Day

Have you ever noticed your heart rate? Okay, in the middle of a horror movie, a first date or the down-drop on a roller-coaster, you might! But, day-to-day? Probably not. Just because it beats all the time, doesn’t mean that changes in its speed should be ignored. It’s time to find out how healthy your heart really is.

What your heart rate means

Too fast or too slow could mean that you have an underlying heart condition. To complicate matters, not everyone’s the same: endurance athletes usually have a slower heart rate, but they’re completely healthy. So, what’s normal? Well, that’s what you’re going to find out.

Heart health indicators

Cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes and smoking: how many TV adverts have you seen that mention them? A lot! That’s because these issues have a huge impact on your heart health. Here’s how to use them to pinpoint your heart-health score.

Your healthy heart test

Don’t worry, you don’t have to study for this test. All you need to do is:

• Have your total and ‘good’ (HDL) cholesterol tested
• Have your blood pressure levels tested
• Inform us whether you have diabetes and/or smoke

The combination of this information will be assessed and you’ll receive a Health Heart Score. This score will indicate your heart health and you’ll be told which ‘traffic light’ colour you fall under:

Green: Low risk of heart disease
Amber: Moderate risk of heart disease
Red: High risk of heart disease

You want to be “good to GO!” So, GREEN status is your goal. If you don’t, you need to make some lifestyle changes to lower your risk – and they aren’t difficult.
