Valentine’s Day ideas to pull the heartstrings

Valentine’s Day ideas to pull the heartstrings

Love is in full bloom on February 14th. While we shouldn’t need a reason to shower our loved ones with gifts, Valentine’s Day gives us a wonderful opportunity to let the important people in our lives know how we feel.

However, planning something special can be difficult, especially if you’re unsure what your date might like. We’ve put together a few Valentine’s Day date ideas that you can use to create a day they’ll never forget, whether you’re longtime partners or your love is just starting to blossom.

The Relaxing Valentine’s Day

Celebrate Valentine’s Day early. By celebrating on the Sunday it not only means that you can spend the whole day with your loved one, but it also gives you the perfect excuse for a lazy lie-in! Welcome the day by having a big bouquet of flowers delivered and breakfast in bed. French toast is usually a favourite, and don’t be afraid to go heavy on the syrup (we’re allowed to splurge a little for Valentine’s Day, after all).

You could spend the afternoon watching romantic comedies. Or better yet, book a couple’s massage, after a lengthy sleep in of course.

Nothing says Valentine’s Day more than a deep tissue massage (even if you don’t have a date this year, you can enjoy a massage along with other ways to celebrate being single on Valentine’s Day), followed by an afternoon by the pool or at a secluded beach.

Finish off the day by cooking a hearty pasta dish together. Or if you have the taste buds for it, you might try a dozen oysters if you really want to spice things up. Serve everything with a bottle of bubbly, and make sure you don’t forget dessert.

The Outdoor Valentine’s Day

If you have an adventurous spirit, organise a nature walk in one of our amazing botanical gardens or parks. South Africa has hundreds of amazing trails and outdoor activities that you can enjoy together. Take in the breath-taking views of the coastline or countryside while enjoying a pre-packed picnic lunch.

Bring salads, bread rolls and cold meats, so you have enough strength to venture back into civilisation. Don’t forget something sweet. You can’t go wrong with chocolate-covered strawberries.

If you’re feeling particularly romantic, whisk each other away for a lover’s camping trip. Find a spot in the woods, pitch a tent and bond while roasting marshmallows over the campfire. If you’re not one for roughing it, find a nice bed and breakfast and watch the sun set over a glass of wine.

The Quirky Valentine’s Day

The 70s and 80s are making a comeback in the fashion world, so why not bring them back into the dating world? Activities that our parents loved, such as rollerblading and ice-skating, create a sense of romantic nostalgia that is hard to beat.

The group environment makes these activities perfect for people in blossoming relationships. Hold each other’s hands tight to make sure you don’t fall over. After zooming around the rink, sit down for hotdogs and ice-cream. You’ll feel as though you’re back in high school. Nothing is better than young love.

The Personal Valentine’s Day

Themed date nights are becoming a favourite and can really show someone how well you know them. Plan a night around a favourite book, movie or TV show, remembering the devil is in the detail. If you can, find props and costumes to make it as authentic as possible. Just make sure every last rose petal is in place.

No matter what you choose to do on Valentine’s Day, don’t forget to take your date up a notch by giving the lucky lady a beautiful bunch of Valentine’s Day flowers. Keep it traditional and romantic with a bouquet of roses, delivered to her (or his!) door.
